Malhar, situated in Bilaspur district, is an archaeological site that has yielded remains of Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples, and artifacts dating from the 2nd century BCE to the 12th century CE. The site reflects a long continuum of religious and cultural activity in the region.

Malhar offers a layered historical narrative, from early Buddhist settlements to medieval Hindu temple complexes, showcasing the evolution of religious practices and architectural styles in central Chhattisgarh.

Artifacts from Malhar include pottery, coins, iron tools, and sculptures. The site has yielded inscriptions in Brahmi and Nagari scripts, shedding light on administrative and religious practices.

The site encompasses multiple structural phases: early Buddhist brick buildings, later Hindu stone temples, and medieval fortifications. Inscriptions found here provide valuable chronological data.

Malhar was a significant center of Buddhism in ancient Dakshina Kosala. Excavations have revealed brick structures, stupas, and sculptures indicative of Theravada and Mahayana traditions.

The Pataleshwar Temple showcases early stone temple architecture with a simple sanctum and mandapa. The Deorani-Jethani Temple presents a unique duplex shrine design, possibly representing a divine couple.

Malhar's history spans several dynasties, including the Sungas, Satavahanas, Nagas, and Kalachuris. The site was likely a important trade route junction, facilitating cultural exchange between northern and southern India.
